Can you help us spread the word about DuHope?

Hey Friends!

I'm so excited to share that as of Friday morning Rwanda time, we are at 32% of our goal. God is so good! This weekend would you be willing to go to your churches, small groups, cell groups, community groups, mission teams and whoever else you will see this weekend and share our need of $6800 left to launch this new ministry? We have nicknamed this project "DuHope", helping young women get out of sex work and prostitution and finding hope.

Thank you!
jamie
Thursday morning, I saw this young woman cross my path as I was headed for work. I don't know her name, but her walk and clothing spoke volumes to me. The Rwandan culture is very conservative and this young woman's skirt was way above her knees. She had her hands in her back pocket and a sucker in her mouth. She almost strutted as she walked. It was 7:15am. My assumption is that she had just gotten off work and was headed home. She looked like she was maybe 16-18 years old. My heart sank. My eyes have been opened and I can not unsee what I've seen. So I'm asking for your help to share our new ministry with your church family this weekend.

About two years ago, I started calling our ministry training program "Duhu" as a way to shorten the Kinyarwanda word Duhugurane, meaning "Let us learn from each other" and I started calling the girls "Duhus". We have nicknamed this new ministry "DuHope" and the girls "DuHopes". We want them to know there is always hope in the name of Jesus and we want to help them find other options of supporting their children and themselves than selling sex to strangers.

We have found more than 20 young women who want out of prostitution who we will be meeting on Wednesday afternoon July 15. Please be praying for our meeting, our team and the women who will be joining us.

Below is a letter you can share with your friends.
Dear Friends,

In the capital city of Kigali, Rwanda, there is a large population of women who are involved in sex work. They have chosen to sell sex out of desperation, lack of options, and agency. We have identified some women who are free to make the choice to get out if they had an alternative. And they want out!

Miss J.’s story is one we have heard is all too common in the city. Miss J. was brought from a village to work for a woman, who ended up leaving the city and leaving Miss J. with no employment. She ran to a man for love and options. When she became pregnant, she found out this man who she thought loved her, was married. He wanted nothing to do with her or his son, leaving her to fend for herself and her unborn son. Life is not too friendly to a 22, unmarried, uneducated and now pregnant young women. She was able to provide for her little family selling clothes on the street until her entire stock was stolen. Her son was now 2 years old and she couldn’t stand to see him starve. “All I had left to sell was myself.” And for $ .80 she let a stranger have sex with her. Her son is now 5 and she looked into my eyes as she explained in her mother tongue that if she had ANY options, she would not be a prostitute.

Belay Global started Duhugurane “Let us learn from each other”, or “Duhu”, two and half years ago in Rwanda and has trained over 170 people, mostly young women, in different areas including Biblically-based life skills, practical job skills, and launching their own business. But our eyes have been opened to a group of young women who want out of sex work and we are asking you to partner with us in serving them.

We are partnering with our friends at No. 41, a local social enterprise business who employs hopeful women. Starting from day one of their training, the women will learn how to make jewelry or small items to receive some compensation to replace their current income. During this one-year training, we will also be pouring into these women their God-given value through Bible study, basic education, and life skills. Whether they find new employment or launch their own business, our dream is for these women to learn their identity in who God made them to be and let their lights shine His glory for the rest of their lives.

We are currently trying to raise $10,000 to launch this ministry and then will be able to assess better our on-going needs. Any amount you can do to help can make a huge difference!
